WHAT TO DO & WHERE TO GO
The
mighty bulk of Windsor Castle lies the county's main
claim to the title of 'Royal Berkshire'. Windsor
Great Park, part of the royal hunting forest which
once covered much of the county, sprawls around the
castle walls; and Eton College lies directly across
the River Thames. Upstream is the village of Cookham,
immortalised by the painter Stanley Spencer, and
among the leafv backwaters is the office of the
Keeper of the Royal Swans. Yet Berkshire is in no
way trapped its pedigree heritage.
Windsor, for
example, has one of Britain's leading modern safari
parks, while Reading, the bustling county town, has
museums devoted to the lives of common people in
bygone times. To the west, the downland surges to
nearly 1000ft, and on Ink-pen Hill stands a gibbet
surviving as a gruesome relic from the davs of
highwaymen. These wild, wind-buffet? heights are
very far in their mood from the well-bred banks of
Thameside Berkshire
