CARAVAN MOVERS

General Information

Caravan Movers are devices to help you move or manoeuvre your caravan about. The simplest is perhaps a manually operated winch to help you wind a van up or down a fairly steep slope, similar to those fitted to boat trailers, and set up with a tow hitch plate that fits into the tow hitch as would the tow ball on your car. If the winch is also fitted to this plate, then you have a degree of control over steering the van using the jockey wheel as you winch away merrily!

Next are units designed to replace or fit alongside the original jockey wheel when required for manoeuvering. These come as both manually wound and electrically operated units, and make steering your van easy and reliable, with good precision for difficult corners or dog-legs on driveways. If you have difficult access, think through which side of your van causes the problem and whether or not the unit should be fitted to that side of the "A-frame" as you can generally only watch one side of the van as you operate and steer one of these units. Check also the maximum gradient of slope the unit can tackle, and note some of these units will not perform well on grassy pitches or loose gravel.

Permanently fitted movers have one or more rollers and motor units fitted to your van chassis. These are generally fitted so that an eccentric cam arrangement moves the rollers into contact with the van tyres, when a controller allows you to move the van in any direction using combinations of forward and reverse drive, and forward one wheel, reverse the other. The control of these units is impressive, allowing movements of 25mm (1") or less in various directions, and turning a van in it's own length. These movers normally run from the van 12v battery system, and will tackle slopes, and some grassy and gravel surfaces. Use in muddy conditions however, tends to clog the rollers and wheelspin occurs between the rollers and the van tyres, until the van will then stop as if bogged down. The cost of these units reflects the advantages outlined above. The remote control normally allows you to check on both sides of your van whilst operating.

Most of these movers (all types) can be purchased via caravan dealers. Fitting is not beyond the capabilities of any competent DIY person prepared to lie about on the ground whilst using hand and/or small power tools. Check the price fitted, and THEN decide if you want to tackle the job yourself.
